Two Motor Vehicle Coverages You Should Have

People often ask us what they need to know about motor vehicle insurance. There are two vital coverages that most people don’t typically purchase because they either want to keep their premiums as low as possible, or their insurance agents simply do not make them aware of these available coverages.

Medical payments coverage (MPC) covers your medical expenses that your personal injury protection coverage (PIP) does not. Your PIP typically only covers 80% of your medical bills, up to a maximum of $10,000.00 paid. Your MPC pays for the amounts in excess of 80% of any bills, and 100% after the $10,000.00 in PIP has been exhausted.

Perhaps most important is the uninsured motorist (UM) or underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage. This protects you if the damages caused by your injuries exceed the at-fault party’s bodily injury (BI) coverage. Many drivers, especially in these times, are driving their vehicles with no or very inadequate BI coverage.

Both the MPC and UM/UIM coverages may add a little more cost to your premium, but are well worth it especially if you are involved in a significant collision involving serious personal injuries. You should contact your insurance agent to make sure that you have them, and if you do not, you should add them and ask your agent to send you a copy of your policy declarations page to reflect that these coverages are included.
